Blood and the Blood Test by Owais Breath
The transport of vital nutrients, oxygen, and drugs and even the waste material, gases etc occur in the body through a liquid connective tissue. This liquid connective tissue is called as Blood. It basically is a specialized bodily fluid that delivers necessary substances to the cells of the body. Here the transport of the nutrients, oxygen and other beneficial substances occurs from the source organs to the cells via blood and likewise the transport of waste materials, metabolites, harmful gases (including CO2) occur from the cells to the blood.
Other than the basic transportation function of the supply of oxygen, nutrients and removal of wastes there are also some very vital biological functions performed by the blood. They are as follows:-
- Blood performs many immunological functions like circulation of white blood cells, and detection of foreign material by antibodies. It plays a major role in the defense mechanism of the body.
- Other than imparting immunity to the organism, the blood is also very important in the self repairing mechanism of the body called as Coagulation. Clotting helps repair and heal the injuries on the surface of the body (and also inside the body). The clot hence formed as a result of this process seals an open wound in order to stop bleeding and prevents blood loss.
- As a fluid connective tissue, messenger and transporter the blood also performs the transport of hormones and the signaling of tissue damage.
- It also performs many regulatory functions like the regulation of body pH of the body and also the regulation of core body temperature. The regulation of the internal body temperature despite the changes in the outside atmosphere is particularly important in the warm blooded animals. Other than this the blood being the only liquid majorly circulating in the body also performs the important hydraulic functions.
What is blood test?
Blood test is an important laboratory analysis performed on a blood sample. This sample is usually extracted from a vein in the arm using a needle or via a finger-prick. The analysis is usually performed by comparing the amount of various chemical entities present in the blood under test to the standard ratio of one or more chemical entities that are actually supposed to be present in the blood. Differences in the quantities and proportions are determined.
Why Blood test?
The difference in the proportion of various vital metabolites and constituents in the blood help in identifying the presence of various ailments of the body. Blood tests are mainly used to determine physiological and biochemical states, such as disease, mineral content, drug effectiveness, and organ function. Presence of various harmful chemicals, poison and even drugs can be determined through the blood test. They also help in determining the presence of pathogens in the body.
It is therefore important that the reports of the blood test and the lab test results are properly understood by the patient so that he/she has a clear understanding of the ailment of the body.
