History of and Current Application of Acupuncture by Laurie Binder
Acupuncture is a popular and well-established treatment for many ailments. There is a constant increase in acupuncture treatments as a complement to western medicine.
Acupuncture has been in practice for over 2500 years and is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine. This practice is wide-spread throughouth Asia, America and Europe. It is said that the use of this treatment aids in strengthening the physical body, preventing disease and controlling pain as well as calming the mind, enhancing health and assisting in sports performance and addiction withdrawal. This treatment helps restore your body's Qi (pronounced "Chee"). This is the energy flowing through your body; Illness or disease is caused by an imbalance in the body's Qi patterns. The body's natural balance is restored with the strategic application of acupuncture needles to specific points on the body.
The above is the traditional means of acupuncture and the treatment that is available in our day and age still closely follows this however it has also advanced to include a wider selection of treatments such as Moxibustion (Moxa), which is a herbal form of the treatment and Auricular Therapy, which is the use of needles on points in the ear.
Just as the way in which this treatment is administered has evolved, so has the way in which it is used. What I mean by this is rather than focus on the theory of the Qi, some of the people who practice this acupuncture prefer to look at it from a scientific point of view. From this viewpoint, the treatment helps the body release endorphins, a natural painkiller.
Whichever point of view you take on this treatment the actual procedure will stay the same. For example if you are having the traditional form of the treatment carried out you will attend a consultation appointment first where your tongue will be examined and your pulse will be taken, this will give an indication into your health as well as your flow of energy. From this your acupuncturist will be able to decide which parts of your body, or acu-points they need to target. In most cases during your treatment you will have several needles inserted literally centimeters into your skin. It's a painless process described by most people as a slight tingling sensation. The amount of time these needles are left in for depends on aspects such as why you are having the treatment carried out in the first place, for example the needles could be inserted and left for 15-20 minutes or more or they could be taken straight out again.
The treatment of acupuncture is one that is surrounded by ongoing research but it is also renowned for its effect especially where pain relief is concerned. People worldwide rely on this alternative therapy and its' many applications.
