Understanding and Treating Incontinence by Eddie Amoakuh

Urinary incontinence is a very sensitive issue that affects an expansive amount of American adults. Naturally, people have a variety of questions and concerns when it comes to incontinence and the factors that may trigger it, treat it, and prevent it. Generally, stress or an overactive bladder causes incontinence; however, causes of incontinence can be dramatically different between men and women. Due to the sensitivity or embarrassment that those living with incontinence may feel, it is important to considerately address their issue and to treat them with care.

What is incontinence?

Incontinence in its simplest definition refers to involuntary urination or defecation. It is defined as a symptom of the urinary tract and not a disease, and signifies different issues in men than it does in women. Incontinence can affect your hygiene and, more generally, interfere with the way that you approach everyday life.

What is incontinence in men?

Men may experience incontinence for one of several reasons. This may occur due to your bladder squeezing too hard or at the wrong time, a full bladder, damaged muscles around the urethra, or something blocking the urethra. Further, men may experience either short-term or long-term incontinence, the latter being chronic.

Types and Causes of Incontinence in Men

There are several types of urinary incontinence that men may experience. Stress incontinence can occur upon completing simple actions like sneezing, coughing, or laughing. It is often experienced when the prostate gland has been removed. These actions can put stress on your bladder and pressure it to leak urine at inopportune or unpredictable times. Contrastingly, urge incontinence is when men experience such an overpowering need to urinate that they cannot quite make it to a bathroom in time to appropriately release their urine. It may be experienced when there are other urinary problems occurring simultaneously. There is also overflow incontinence, which typically occurs when your bladder does not fully empty or empty when it should, and is generally caused by something blocking the urethra like an enlarged prostate gland. Finally, there is total incontinence, which typically occurs in older men and signifies that the sphincter muscle no longer functions properly.

Types and Causes of Incontinence in Women

Women typically experience one of two types of urinary incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. These symptoms may be triggered by an existing urinary tract infection or by weak muscles in the lower urinary tract. However, unlike for males, stress incontinence in women can be caused by weight gain or childbirth. Further, urge incontinence in women may be caused by emotional distress or brain conditions. Leakage typically occurs after women consume liquids or when they hear or touch running water.

How to Prevent and Treat Incontinence

There are a number of ways that you can try to prevent urinary incontinence. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and obesity can all contribute to the onset of urinary incontinence in men. Reducing your intake of these substances combined with muscle-strengthening exercises and a high-fiber diet can help to both prevent and treat urinary incontinence in men and women alike. However, chronic incontinence is best treated by prescribed medicines. You may also look into recommended continence products like diapers and incontinence clamps, once you’ve seen a medical expert.
