Best Method to Clean your Surgical Instrument by Brandon Smitherston

You should keep manual cleaning to a minimum when cleaning your surgical instruments. When deceding on a soap selection. The best is a 0 PH level. You should never use a soap that is not exclusively designed to be used on surgical instruments. To avoid stains and rust, its best to use a soap that is made especially for surgical instruments. The manual washing part is where brushing occurs to clean box locks, serrations and lumens.

Soaps Not to use for Cleaning your Surgical tools:
-Housekeeping soaps
-Laundry detergent
-hand scrub for surgeons
-Iodine based soaps

Ultrasonic Surgical Instrument Cleaning:
The best way you can do to clean your surgical equipment is to use ultra sonic technology. By doing this you'll be getting rid of the bioburden and its OK to use for use on your medical instruments. The longer the surgical instruments are in the ultrasonic cleaner, the more clean they will become. Never put manuel instrument cleaning soaps in an ultra sonic cleaner and only use a neutral PH level solution.

Rinsing of Surgical Instruments:
After manual washing or ultrasonic cleaning, rinse the medical instruments with water, preferably with distilled water. Dont forget to remove residue from your surgical instruments after cleaning.

Drying of Surgical Instruments:
To avoid water spots on your surgical instruments never allow water to dry on it, which will turn into stains.

Lubrication of Surgical Instruments:
after use hinged surgical instruments need lubrication. A spray-on lubricant or machine applied lubrication works best for instruments for surgery. The most reconmended are neutral PH lubricants. Mineral based lubricants can never be used as steam, cannot penetrate mineral oils and instruments will not achieve sterility.

Other Surgical Instrument Tips:
-The temperature of tank solution can improve performance with heated solution.
-When you can see bioburden in the tank you should change it. For best results change it daily.
-The more the medical tools are left in the better.
-To reduce cleaning efficiency do not overload ultrasonic cleaner.
-Be sure to keep your surgical instruments in an open position when you place them in the ultrasonic cleaner.
