Until when were Down Bros London in business?

My dad was an ophthalmologist. He died a few months ago. In his stuff I came across a brass magnifying glass made by Down Bros London. I tried to look them up on the internet. It looks like they manufactured surgical & ophthalmic instruments but are not in business anymore. Does anybody know when they went out of business? My dad was in the UK in 1960s. I don't intend to sell it. I'm just curious about how long he had owned it. Any help would be appreciated.

Down Bros still trade but under the new name of Downs Surgical. A link to their company history is below. They have been a major instrument maker since the latter part of the 19th Century and there are many collectors of their work. Even their early catalogues are collectible, the 1892 catalogue is available on CD.

It will be difficult to know whether your Dad bought the magnifier new or as an antique but being able to date it accurately will help. I guess this will take quite a bit of research on your part looking at auction sites, contacting dealers and seeing if you can find the exact model your Dad owned.
